A Message from the Youth Department

I would like to share with you a wonderful experience that was shared by so many of our Shaar youth. Yesterday evening, around 100 children from Foundation School age through high school age gathered to kick off our year of Shaar Youth activities.

The high school youth gathered at Murray Hill Park for an exciting and rhythmic drum circle followed by an active game of Ultimate Shaar Frisbee, using our newly released Shaar Frisbees. At the same time, children through Grade 6 baked personalized honey cakes and enjoyed a magic show.

All of the youth gathered at the end of the evening for a delicious barbecue prepared by Jose, Tanya, and their incredible team. It was wonderful to see the youth of the Shaar together, enjoying each other’s company and feeling at home in our synagogue.

Our congregation has so many programs geared to all different demographics. It was incredible to see the Youth of our synagogue begin their year at the Shaar on such a strong note.

On behalf of the Youth Committee, we are eagerly anticipating a year filled with fabulous activities. Please take a moment to click here and see Youth Programs Flyer for the coming year.

MUSIC CORNER

Our annual Choral S'lichot Service takes place this coming Saturday night, September 4th. S’lichot are prayers recited in the period leading up to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur - a time of repentance and spiritual renewal for the Jewish people.

The poems, hymns and petitions which comprise these S’lichot have inspired some of the most beautiful and varied music in the Jewish liturgy.

The Edward Bronfman Museum

In time for the celebration of Rosh Hashanah, the Museum presents the original artwork of Basil Ivan Rakoczi, “In the Beginning”. Selected etchings from the folio are on display along with hand-printed biblical quotations from the Book of Genesis, done by Marita van der Poest Clement.
